Remote interviews are here to stay. Whether it be Skype, Zoom, Webex or Teams, here’s a few things that might be worth remembering:-
- Make sure your technology is in good working order – you don’t want to realise that your audio or camera isn’t working at the last minute. Always try and do a test run with a friend or family member a day or so before the interview, that way if there is a problem with your technology you have time to find a resolution.
- Dress the part – wear what you would wear to a face to face interview. Interviewers may not be able to see all of what you’re wearing on but dressing for an interview will help you be in the right mindset.
- Remove distractions – try and find a quiet area for your interview where you won’t be distracted. If you’re interviewing on a laptop you may want to switch your mobile to silent and think about turning off any notifications (having an email ping up half way through a call can put off even the most experienced interviewer!)
- Do your usual interview research – just because the interview is being done remotely doesn’t mean any less research should be done. Research the business, know the job spec of the position you’re applying for and rehearse key interview questions.
- Think about your background – research has shown first impressions make a big difference in interview outcome, therefore we always recommend a clear, uncluttered background which will allow the interviewer to focus on you.
- Prep, prep, prep - make sure everything is ready to go at least ten minutes before the interview, you don’t want to be logging on to the call flustered because you couldn’t find a pen!
Once you’ve come to the end of your interview, make sure you remember your interview etiquette and thank the interviewer for their time. If you are interested in the opportunity, it’s always a good idea to let the interviewer know and enquire as to when you can expect feedback.
Last but not least – one of the most important points. Make sure you hang up correctly!
